The Hummingbird marine portable marine radio is available locally for $99.00. It has a nice feature set, and will scan the entire marine batch of frequencies in about a second or so.
It outputs 1 watt and 5 watts selectively.
What are the legalities regarding using the radios not from a boat? How about using it away from the water.
How about close to some water and sounding like a boat (I guess you could make boat-motor noises with your lips...)
The other option for "family communications" would be the legal family radios, but at a half a watt and about the same price (yes, except for the Walmart really good price) the marine radio sounds like a good deal... if you don't abuse it, or get arrested by the fcc of course.
Any thoughts? Anyone monitor any non-marine traffic on any of these bands?
