Woody, thanks for the feedback! I tried going one step better.
I tried the "1,3" trick and could actually see the scanner
as it scanned each individual channel. It would also stop on
channels with tones programmed in. Also, it seemed to stay on those
channels for a moment, about as long as my 780 does. So I guess
it's not as bad as I thought; the slowdown in scanning speed
caused by a "stop" on a toned channel is made up by the 780's
faster scanning speed.
