Base and Mobile Antennas to use with BC-780XLT & BCT-7?

Hello, everyone. I am wanting to purchase a BC-780XLT and a BCT-7. (Please see my "want to buy" post on the for sale board if you have one to sell.) My questions are as follows:

1 - If I'm going to get the 780, do I really need the BCT-7? I like the idea of the highway patrol mobile extender warning system. Does anybody know if that feature really works? If it doesn't, then there is no need for me to buy the BCT-7, unless somebody knows of some other advantages to the BCT-7.

2 - I am thinking of getting an Antenna Specialists MON-52 trunk lip mount antenna. Would this be better than the Firestik MSM-4 4' whip with their trunk lip mount and spring? Any better suggestions?

3 - For a base antenna, I am probably going to have to put the antenna in the attic. I have a maximum 7'8" clearance to the ridge beam of the roof. I have been looking at the Antenna Specialists MONR31, the Firestik MSB-RX, and the Scantenna
ST-2. Does anybody have a suggestion which would be the best. I don't have enough clearance for an HF/VHF/UHF super discone. How much will having the antenna in my attic (cedar decking with composition shingles, one story) diminish my reception capabilities? Also, what kind of coax should I use? I will probably have to run at least 20 to 40 feet.

Thanks, folks. I really appreciate the advice.
