CC Search Mode - Observations To Date

The control channel search mode is amazing. Yesterday, I set up
the 780xlt and the WinScan780 software to use the 780xlt's control
channel search feature. I was trying to find the particulars of
our local electrical utility company's trunking system. We
recently had a lot of storm-related damage, and I wanted to see
how their system was being utilized.

By going to a frequency database, I found 55 800 MHz trunking
channels which were licensed for use the company.

I then started searching the 851-860 MHZ range for control channel
signals which were on one of the 55 above channels. I found 2
that were active. I put the scanner into the CC mode, and within
an hour, there were hits on 6 frequencies and about 15 talk
groups. However, I couldn't hear any audio. So, I decided to set
the scanner up on the other 'active' control channel. BINGO!

After two hours, I not only had an abundance of talkgroup audio,
but the WinScan780 software logged 71 talkgroups. I used the
"upload" feature to put all of them into the scanner. Absolutely
amazing!

This 780xlt and the software programming are a wonderful way to
save time and still have an incredible receiving capability.

One thing I found the hard way: I learned that the scanner won't
go into the CC mode unless I lock out all other banks and then
lock out all other channels within the bank which contains the
control channel. Until I figured this out, I never got to first
base. The manual is pretty skimpy on instructions for the CC
search mode.

At this time, I have the scanner alternating between 2 separate
800MHz trunking systems (both Type II) and 8 different
conventional banks. There is no appreciable delay in picking up
the control channels. Admittedly, I don't have all 8 conventional
banks full, but there are a lot of channels in the receiver.

This scanner is a keeper.

Happy monitoring.
