It sounds like a connection problem.
if the program opens and you can "open" a connection with the modem or printer ports optionwithout crashing your machine it's probably a cable problem. Sounds like the same issue I'm dealing with re: the old-style machine I'm using at work.
I just read the READ ME one more time and will try to follow instructions for the cable selection. In fact, I'm off to Fry's for cables right now...
