Battery pack for 780

anyone built a battery pack for a the 780xlt, I figure 9 1.5 volt cells would provide 13.5volts, what would be the best way to do this and how long would the 780 not using backlight last. I figure NIMH batteries and 9 C size versions would do the trick nicely
