I am looking for some answers on antennas and getting better reception. My Dad recently moved and he put up a new discone antenna (w/RG6 cable) in the attic over his garage. He is unable to pick up some frequencies that he would really like to listen to, one of them being the fire dept I work for. My dept uses a Motorola Type II 800mHz trunked system and my Dad lives about 15-20 miles away. I've come to the conclusion that the 800mHz trunked stuff doesn't seem to carry very far in terms of reception. Is this true ? I've tried his scanner and also my scanner at his house and I can't get any reception whatsoever. Would it make any difference if he were to use a different type of antenna ? He doesn't really want to mount anything outside but he may have to if nothing works mounted inside. He also listens to other frequencies that are in the 150mHz range as well as some 460mHz stuff so I need an antenna that would cover those as well.
Please advise if there's anything I can do for his setup.
