Maybe it's something to do with the power it's getting? Maybe under/over voltage, or too much/little current? I've seen car stereos dim out if the ground gets corroded or loose.
Have you tried taking it out and plugging it into the wall wart? (or can you plug in the back without too much trouble)
Just some guesses.
