You don't say but I would guess the system is quiet for awhile just before it does it. This is the infamous reaquire bug (Uniden calls it feature). The 780 is fooled into thinking the system has changed control channels and goes off in search of the new one. If I remember correctly there is no way to cure this but there are workarounds that minimize it. I believe if you lock out all freqs but the ones used by your system as control channels it locks back on much quicker.
